The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ varsity volleyball team delivered a hard-fought performance on the road Monday, April 27, pushing Doral Red Rock High School to five sets in a match filled with momentum swings, long rallies and steady contributions across the lineup.

Pahrump Valley settled in early after a back-and-forth start to the opening set. Andy Sanchez helped keep plays alive with a well-placed tip, while the Trojans worked through early miscues to find rhythm. Doral built a lead midway through the set, but Pahrump Valley responded behind improved net play and defensive effort. Nicholas Watson sparked a short run from the service line, and Jack Schable came up with a key dig to extend a rally and secure a point. Despite closing the gap late, the Trojans dropped the first set 25-17.

The second set brought some of the most competitive play of the night. Sanchez and Elijah Thompson connected on multiple attacks, while Alexander Mahoney mixed in effective tips to challenge Doral’s defense. Pahrump Valley steadily worked back from small deficits, eventually tying the set late after a service ace from Ryan Nasso energized the team. The closing stretch turned into a point-for-point battle, with both teams trading strong plays at the net. The Trojans briefly gained momentum late, but Doral edged out a narrow 25-23 win.

Trailing two sets, Pahrump Valley responded with one of its strongest stretches of the match in the third. Communication improved and the Trojans began to control the pace. Mahoney continued to find open floor with precise placement, while Nasso’s serving helped shift momentum. James Wilson delivered a key block in the middle that sparked energy on the court, and Schable added another standout dig during a long rally. George Anderson contributed with a timely block late in the set. In a tightly contested finish, the Trojans stayed composed and capitalized on late opportunities to take the set 27-25.

That momentum carried into the fourth set as Pahrump Valley found its rhythm offensively. Sanchez led the attack with a series of strong swings, while Mahoney remained consistent with well-timed tips. Watson delivered back-to-back aces during a key stretch, and Nasso added another from the service line. Defensively, the Trojans held steady through extended rallies, maintaining control late in the set to secure a 25-17 win and force a fifth.

In the deciding set, Doral jumped out to an early lead, putting pressure on the Trojans to respond. Pahrump Valley continued to battle, with Sanchez and Thompson connecting on key plays, but the early deficit proved difficult to overcome. Doral maintained its advantage to close out the set and the match.

Despite the result, the Trojans showed resilience and the ability to adjust throughout the match. Schable’s defensive presence, Mahoney’s consistency at the net, and Sanchez’s offensive leadership all stood out, while contributions across the lineup highlighted the team’s depth.

Matches like this—tight, competitive and played point-for-point—offer valuable experience as the Trojans continue to build toward the final stretch of the season.
