Dr. David Watson, known for his unwavering commitment and expertise, has been an integral part of Desert View Hospital for the past seven years. With a rich background that includes a medical degree from USC School of Medicine and a residency at UCLA, Dr. Watson’s journey into medicine was as unexpected as it was inspiring.

“Becoming a physician wasn’t always my plan,” Dr. Watson reflects. Growing up without any medical professionals in his family, he was initially drawn towards music, playing guitar from a young age. It wasn’t until a college professor suggested he take the MCAT that Dr. Watson considered a career in medicine. His natural aptitude and stellar MCAT scores paved the way for his acceptance into medical school.

While his initial interest leaned towards neurosurgery, Dr. Watson’s experiences during his rotations revealed the demanding lifestyle associated with that specialty. “I was told many times, if I chose neurosurgery, I wouldn’t know my wife or children,” he explains. “I realized I wanted more to life than just being a physician.” This revelation led him to emergency medicine, a field that resonated with his desire to help those without a safety net. “Many people who come to the ER have nowhere else to go. It’s often the worst day of their lives, and I wanted to be there for them.” Dr. Watson also explained that the dynamics of emergency medicine help to avoid that monotony burnout that some other specialties have. “I enjoy the variety and the challenge,” Dr. Watson shared. “It’s gratifying to make a difference, whether it’s saving a life or providing comfort to someone in distress.”

Dr. Watson’s role at Desert View Hospital is multifaceted. As the Chief of Staff and ER Director, he navigates the challenges of emergency medicine with expertise and compassion. He is part of Envision Physician Services, the largest ER staffing company globally, and is proud to be associated with the Valley Health System, which includes several hospitals in Las Vegas.

Despite his demanding schedule, Dr. Watson’s commitment to patient care remains unwavering. He recounts a recent case where he saved a woman’s life by performing an emergency cricothyrotomy to secure her airway. “It’s moments like these that remind me why I love what I do,” he shares. His ability to handle diverse and critical cases, from allergic reactions to newborn resuscitations, highlights his versatility and dedication.

Beyond the hospital, Dr. Watson has a unique role as a ringside physician for the Nevada Athletic Commission. For over 25 years, he has been a crucial part of ensuring the safety of fighters in boxing and UFC events. “It’s about the health and safety of the unarmed combatants,” he emphasizes. His preparation for these events involves detailed physical exams and understanding each fighter’s medical history to ensure they can safely compete.

Dr. Watson’s dedication extends into his personal life, where he balances his professional responsibilities with his love for music and art. “I enjoy playing guitar and painting,” he says, adding that spending time with his wife and six children is a top priority. Despite his busy schedule, he manages to be actively involved in his children’s lives, attending their sports events and sharing in family activities.

Dr. Watson’s commitment to continuous learning and adapting to new medical advancements keeps him from experiencing the burnout that affects many in his field. He believes that staying updated with the latest research and maintaining a compassionate approach to patient care are essential qualities for any physician.

When asked about the historical figures he would like to dine with, Dr. Watson’s choices reflect his admiration for intellectual and creative greatness. He mentioned Isaac Newton for his groundbreaking contributions to science, Mozart and Beethoven for their extraordinary musical talents, and Martin Luther King Jr. for his impactful leadership in civil rights. These figures inspire Dr. Watson with their remarkable achievements and dedication to their respective fields.

In addition to his professional and personal pursuits, Dr. Watson is passionate about charitable work. He supports organizations like Compassion International and prefers direct, meaningful interactions, such as providing food and clothing to those in need. His philosophy is rooted in making a positive impact on others’ lives, both professionally and personally.

For aspiring doctors, Dr. Watson offers sage advice: “Look at life in terms of short-term, intermediate, and long-term goals. It’s a lifestyle, and you need to balance your daily needs with your long-term aspirations.” He stresses the importance of compassion, empathy, and continuous learning in the medical profession.

Dr. Watson’s future goals are centered around maintaining his current balance of work and personal life. “I don’t feel burnt out. I enjoy what I do, and I have no desire for that to end anytime in the near future,” he affirms. His approach to life and medicine, characterized by passion, dedication, and a desire to make a difference, continues to inspire those around him.

As Dr. Watson reflects on his career and contributions, he remains humble and focused on the well-being of his patients and community. “Everyone has something valuable to share,” he says, embodying the compassionate spirit that defines his approach to medicine and life.
