The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans displayed grit and determination on October 22, 2024, in their match against Sloan Canyon, despite falling 2-0. Head Coach Andrew Norton expressed pride in his team’s effort, particularly as they fought a man down for almost the entire game after Callum Atwell received a red card early in the match.

“We controlled the game in the second half,” Coach Norton said. “Even down a man, we kept possession most of the time but just couldn’t finish. I’m proud of the effort.”

The Trojans faced an uphill battle after the early red card, yet they stayed competitive, with goalkeeper Cayden Cowley delivering a standout performance. Cowley made several key saves throughout the match, including a crucial penalty kick stop just eight minutes in, keeping the score 1-0.

The first half ended with PVHS trailing 1-0, but the Trojans came out strong in the second half. They nearly equalized when a shot from the right side hit the crossbar, and moments later, another attempt was saved by the opposing goalkeeper. A potential turning point came at the 28:15 mark when the Trojans’ TC Hone appeared to score, but the goal was disallowed, with the referee ruling the shot hit the higher crossbar.

PVHS continued to press forward, earning a corner kick by Caleb Sierra-Hudgens at the 23-minute mark, though Sloan Canyon’s defense remained solid. The Trojans kept the pressure on, with several more shots on goal, including a last-minute attempt by Sierra-Hudgens, all caught by the opposing goalkeeper.

Cowley was a wall in goal, making multiple saves, including another critical stop at the 9:20 mark. However, Sloan Canyon managed to score their second goal with 15:48 left on the clock, sealing the 2-0 win.

In honor of Senior Night, the coach named the seniors as the Players of the Game, recognizing their leadership, resilience, and contributions throughout the season. “This night goes out to all the seniors,” Norton said. “It’s tough that it didn’t go our way, but I am proud of how hard the team played, only giving up one more goal while down a man. The effort and heart were there.”

The loss officially eliminated PVHS from playoff contention, though the Trojans will look to finish their season strong in their final game against Boulder City on Thursday.

“It was already up in the air whether we’d make the playoffs, but not winning tonight made it final,” Coach Norton said. “Still, I couldn’t be prouder of how this group played, especially under tough circumstances.”

Despite the challenges, the Trojans exhibited the kind of resilience and teamwork that Coach Norton emphasized all season, determined to close the year on a high note.
