Late Push Falls Just Short as Lady Trojans Battle at Coronado

The Pahrump Valley High School softball team saw its 12-game win streak come to an end Saturday, April 25, but not without a determined fight, as the Trojans pushed until the final inning in a narrow 3-2 loss on the road against Coronado—marking their first loss in over a month.

Pahrump Valley came out aggressive in the top of the first, with Aspen Middaugh setting the tone by ripping a ground ball single to get on base. She quickly moved into scoring position with a stolen base, putting early pressure on Coronado. Despite the opportunity, the Trojans were unable to bring her home as the inning closed with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out.

In the bottom half, Jaycie Hayes took the circle for Pahrump Valley and recorded a strikeout early, but Coronado capitalized on a pair of singles and aggressive baserunning to plate the first run of the game. The Trojans limited further damage, with Sadie Freeman making a solid play in right field to help close out the inning trailing 1-0.

The second inning saw both defenses settle in. Mariah Gray and Evalenne Armendariz were retired to start the frame, but Jaelyn Rodriguez reached on an error to keep things alive briefly before the Trojans stranded her. Hayes responded in the circle with a clean defensive effort behind her, highlighted by a bunt play fielded by Hayes and finished by Olivia Veloz at second for the out, helping keep the deficit at one.

Pahrump Valley threatened again in the third. Sadie Freeman led off with a single, and Middaugh followed with another hit to put runners at the corners. The Trojans applied pressure with smart baserunning, including another stolen base by Middaugh, but Coronado’s defense came up with back-to-back fielder’s choice outs to cut down a run at the plate and halt the rally.

The Trojans’ defense answered in the bottom half, as Middaugh made a strong play at shortstop and the infield worked efficiently behind Hayes, who closed the inning with a strikeout to keep the game within reach.

In the fourth, Gray delivered one of the Trojans’ biggest hits of the day, driving a double to center field to put a runner in scoring position. A courtesy runner advanced to third on a groundout by Rodriguez, but Coronado again held firm defensively to escape the inning unscathed.

Coronado added insurance in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together timely hitting that resulted in a two-run double to extend the lead to 3-0. Despite the setback, Hayes and the defense limited the inning to just those runs, keeping the Trojans within striking distance.

Pahrump Valley responded with its strongest offensive push in the fifth. Middaugh worked a walk to reach base, and Hayes followed by putting the ball in play and reaching on an error that moved runners into scoring position. Madison Rodriguez then delivered the key moment, lining a single into left field that drove in two runs to cut the deficit to 3-2. Gray followed with another hit to keep the momentum going, but the Trojans were unable to push across the tying run before the inning ended.

The pitching and defense held steady from there. Hayes worked through the fifth and sixth innings with composure, stranding runners and recording key outs, including a strikeout to end the fifth and a strong defensive sequence in the sixth that featured a clean play from Middaugh at short and a catch in left by Natalie Soto.

Pahrump Valley continued to fight in the sixth, with Rodriguez picking up a single and Myah Krolczyk entering as a courtesy runner, but Coronado’s defense once again prevented any advancement.

Trailing by one in the seventh, the Trojans looked for late-game heroics, but Coronado’s infield made three consecutive plays to close out the game, sealing the 3-2 result.

Despite the loss, Pahrump Valley showed resilience throughout, generating scoring chances in multiple innings and delivering key defensive plays to stay within reach. Middaugh led the way offensively with multiple hits and aggressive baserunning, while Rodriguez drove in both runs for the Trojans. In the circle, Hayes battled through all six innings, limiting damage and giving her team the opportunity to compete until the final out.

While the win streak came to an end, the Trojans’ effort and ability to respond to adversity highlighted a team that continues to compete at a high level as the season nears the playoffs.
