The Pahrump Valley High School varsity boys’ volleyball team delivered an energetic and well-rounded performance on Wednesday, April 1, earning a four-set victory over Cristo Rey on their home court. With strong serving, aggressive net play and contributions from across the roster, the Trojans showcased both their depth and determination throughout the match.

Pahrump set the tone early in the opening set, capitalizing on Cristo Rey errors while building momentum behind the service line. Elijah Thompson recorded an early ace, while Andy Sanchez made his presence known at the net with a key block. Alexander Mahoney added a series of well-placed tips to keep the Trojans in control. As the set progressed, Sanchez continued to lead offensively with powerful swings, and Tristan Whaley contributed a block to extend the lead. Thompson added another ace late, and Sanchez closed things out with a block as Pahrump secured a 25-14 win.

The Trojans carried that energy into the second set, jumping out to a quick lead behind Nicholas Watson’s serving, which included an ace. Mahoney added another ace of his own, while George Anderson and James Wilson contributed with timely attacks to keep Cristo Rey on their heels. Sanchez once again provided a spark, delivering multiple hard spikes—including one that sent the ball flying off a block and out of bounds. The Trojans remained in control down the stretch, with Mahoney finishing the set with a strong, well-timed spike to seal a 25-17 victory.

Set three proved to be the most competitive of the night, as Cristo Rey battled back and kept the score tight throughout. Jack Schable’s serving helped Pahrump take an early lead, while Sanchez and Thompson continued to deliver offensively. Thompson added an ace during a crucial stretch, and Whaley stepped up with a block and tip combination to keep the Trojans ahead. A long rally finished by Thompson and a diving save from William Coen highlighted the team’s defensive effort, followed by a powerful “exclamation” spike from Sanchez that brought the home crowd to life. Despite the effort, Cristo Rey edged out the set 27-25 in a back-and-forth finish.

Undeterred, the Trojans responded emphatically in the fourth set. Sanchez led the charge with a series of dominant kills and smart tips, helping Pahrump build a commanding early lead. Mahoney added a strong block and another decisive kill, while Anderson contributed with a hard spike of his own. Jayden Pedero and William Coen added service pressure, and the Trojans capitalized on several Cristo Rey errors to maintain control. Sanchez continued to anchor the offense late in the set, finishing off multiple attacks as Pahrump closed out the match with a decisive 25-10 win.

Head Coach Amber Lugo praised the group’s continued growth and the collective effort that fueled the win.

“We are making great strides forward, and will continue to work hard to improve every day. Andy is our backbone of leadership and skill. However, every single player is contributing and is instrumental in our ability to get better every day,” Lugo said. “This group will forever hold a special place in my heart simply because of the way they show up. I told them from the beginning be the player everyone wants to have on their team…they are just that.”

From start to finish, the Trojans demonstrated strong teamwork, communication and versatility. With contributions across the lineup and consistent energy on both sides of the ball, Pahrump Valley continues to build momentum as the season progresses.
