The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ basketball team opened play at the Holiday Classic tournament in impressive fashion on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, earning a 75–65 victory over Chaparral High School in a fast-paced, physical matchup that showcased depth, defensive pressure, and balanced scoring.

Pahrump Valley set the tone early with full-court pressure, forcing turnovers and turning defense into offense. After Chaparral scored first, Caden Briscoe answered with a three-pointer from the top of the key, sparking a run fueled by steals and transition buckets. Keir Sheppard and Lucas Gavenda were especially active in the opening quarter, combining for steals, assists, and finishes at the rim as the Trojans built a double-digit lead.

The second quarter saw the Trojans continue to push the tempo. Gavenda attacked the lane repeatedly, scoring off drives and capitalizing on opportunities created by the press. Trae Plein made his presence felt on both ends, converting free throws after aggressive takes and finishing an and-one just before halftime. Pahrump Valley went into the break with momentum and a 43–27 advantage.

Chaparral made a push to open the third quarter, but the Trojans responded with timely shooting and steady interior play. Briscoe knocked down another three, while Aydon Veloz contributed key scores in the paint and strong rebounding on the defensive end. Even as Pahrump Valley shifted out of its full-court press into a zone defense, the team maintained control by answering Chaparral runs with poise and execution.

In the fourth quarter, Chaparral applied pressure of its own, but the Trojans handled it well. Gavenda continued to find scoring opportunities, Plein attacked gaps to draw fouls, and the team stayed composed late, converting when it mattered most to seal the 75–65 win.
