Community Advocate Rallies Support to Light Up Local Parks Until 9 P.M.

Stephanie Avena, a local mother and community advocate, is leading a petition to keep the lights on at Ian Deutch Park and Petrack Park until 9 p.m. every night—an initiative aimed at improving safety and expanding access to public spaces for families, children, and individuals after dark.

In partnership with Positive Pahrump, Avena is working with Nye County commissioners to bring the issue to the forefront of local government discussions. Her goal is simple yet impactful: ensure that parks remain welcoming and well-lit during the evening hours, providing a secure environment for recreation, fitness, and family bonding.

“This started about a year ago when I began asking questions about why the lights weren’t being turned on at Ian Deutch and Petrack Park,” Avena explained. “I have five boys who play on an indoor soccer team based in Las Vegas. Most of their teammates live in Las Vegas and practice at the park there, but my boys had no safe, local place to practice here in town.”

Like many other families, Avena was told that in order to access the lights and fields, they would need to secure general liability insurance and prior approval—requirements she felt were too restrictive for everyday residents simply trying to use their local parks in a positive way. Although she initially stepped back, a recent shooting in the area renewed her determination to advocate for safer, more accessible public spaces.

“Parks should be safe, accessible places for everyone in our community,” Avena said. “Lighting brings safety. A well-lit park is a safe and welcoming park.”

The proposed change would have far-reaching benefits: allowing women to walk safely after work, giving children space to play even if they’re not enrolled in organized sports, and offering families more time to enjoy the outdoors. By discouraging mischief and creating a more active environment, extended lighting hours could also contribute to a safer atmosphere overall.

The community-driven petition has already gained traction, and Avena hopes more residents will add their names in support before the initiative appears on an upcoming agenda. “Your voice matters,” she emphasized. “Together, we can light up our parks and make them a safer place for all.”
