The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ golf team is making a strong case for a shot at state qualification, with five matches now in the books and just a regional performance standing between them and a potential trip to the championship round. Competing in a highly competitive 3A Mountain League, the Trojans currently sit second in the team standings for 3A Mountain, and fourth overall in the southern region, trailing Boulder City, Virgin Valley, and Meadows.

Only the top three teams advance to the state tournament, along with the next six top-performing individuals, making the upcoming regional match, scheduled for May 6th, a pivotal moment in the Trojans’ season.

So far, the team has shown resilience and depth, with different athletes stepping up at each match. Senior leaders Carter Nygaard and Matt Lopez have consistently been among the top performers, earning 156.5 and 151.5 season points respectively. Not far behind are teammates Samson Wagner (117.5 points), Travis Floyd (112.5), and Cayden Cowley (112), all of whom remain in contention for individual state qualifications.

After the Pahrump Valley Invitational, held at Mountain Falls on February 27th and 28, the official season teed off on March 5 at Club Sunrise, where Cayden Cowley and Matt Lopez led the way for the Trojans, each tying for fourth place with scores of +18 to par. Travis Floyd wasn’t far behind, tying for sixth with a +20. Carter Nygaard rounded out the team’s top finishers, tying for 10th at +25.

In their second match at Boulder City Municipal Golf Course on March 26, Carter Nygaard tied for fourth again, this time with a score of +15. Matt Lopez followed closely, tying for seventh at +17, with Cowley placing ninth at +19 and Floyd earning 10th with a +20.

The team competed at Los Prados Golf Course on April 10, where Nygaard once again led the Trojans, securing fourth place with a +12 to par. Floyd finished sixth with +17, Lopez came in 10th with +23, and Samson Wagner made a strong appearance, tying for 11th with a +25.

On April 15, the Trojans traveled to Boulder Creek, where Matt Lopez took the lead among his teammates, placing seventh with +15. Nygaard followed in eighth at +17, Floyd finished ninth at +21, and Cowley secured 10th with a +22. The consistent performance across the roster kept the team competitive in the standings.

Their most recent outing was on April 21 at their home course, Mountain Falls. The Trojans turned in what coaches described as a strong overall performance, though official results from the match are still pending. With momentum on their side, the team is hopeful it will give them the final push they need heading into regionals.

With the state championship just around the corner, every stroke will count. The Trojans have demonstrated the skill, determination, and balance needed to challenge the best in the region. Whether they qualify as a team or send individual players, Pahrump Valley is poised to make its mark on the state stage.
