The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ varsity soccer team combined a steady defensive performance with sustained second-half pressure to earn a 0-0 draw against Equipo Academy on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Las Vegas.
Both teams created scoring opportunities during the opening half, but neither could find a way past the opposing goalkeeper. Pahrump tested Equipo’s keeper early before an Equipo attempt traveled wide at the other end of the field.
Sydney added two shots that missed wide, while Josie Gaitan challenged the goalkeeper with a long attempt from near midfield. Avery Farruggia also created an opportunity, pulling a shot just outside the right side of the goal.
Goalkeeper Jazmyn Herrera remained composed when Equipo moved into the attacking end. Following a handball call against Pahrump, Herrera secured the resulting shot to prevent Equipo from capitalizing. She later collected another attempt as the Trojan defense continued steering several shots away from the goal.
Pahrump nearly broke through late in the first half when Farruggia stepped up for a penalty kick. Her shot narrowly missed after taking a deflection. Sydney followed with another attempt, but Equipo’s goalkeeper knocked it down to preserve the scoreless tie.
The Trojans produced one more long-distance effort before halftime, sending a shot from midfield into the goalkeeper’s hands. The teams entered the break tied at 0-0.
Pahrump increased its possession and spent much of the second half playing on Equipo’s side of the field. Raylee tested the goalkeeper with an early attempt, and Sydney followed with another shot on target that was stopped.
The Trojans continued looking for an opening as another attempt was collected by the keeper. Melissa Nunez-Ramirez later fired a shot toward the goal, but an Equipo defender deflected it before it could reach the net.
Although Pahrump controlled the ball in its attacking half for nearly the entire second half, Equipo’s defense limited the Trojans’ clean looks at the goal. Pahrump was unable to convert its late opportunities, but the Trojans also denied Equipo a breakthrough and finished the match with a 0-0 draw.
