The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ basketball team delivered a strong, detailed effort on Friday night, January 23, pushing the Virgin Valley Bulldogs deep into the fourth quarter before falling 58–52 in a tightly contested home matchup.

Virgin Valley opened the scoring early, but the Trojans quickly settled in. Keir Sheppard got Pahrump Valley on the board midway through the first quarter with a finish inside, then followed with a steal and layup to tie the game at 4–4. After a pair of Bulldogs baskets, Sheppard knocked down a three-pointer to pull the Trojans within one, 7–6. Virgin Valley closed the quarter with a late surge, taking a 12–7 lead after one.

The Trojans responded in the second quarter with one of their best stretches of the night. Sheppard continued to spark the offense, scoring inside before drilling a three-pointer and converting the free throw after being fouled to give Pahrump Valley a 13–14 edge. Trae Plein then connected with Lucas Gavenda for a basket inside, putting the Trojans briefly in front. Virgin Valley answered with timely shots from the perimeter and at the line, but Sheppard added another three late in the half to keep Pahrump Valley within striking distance. A last-second Bulldogs three sent the teams into halftime with Virgin Valley up 29–20.

Halftime provided an extra spark of energy inside the gym as the Pahrump Valley High School dance team took the floor alongside the young dancers who participated in the program’s recent dance camp fundraiser. Performing together in front of a packed home crowd, the group drew loud cheers and smiles throughout the gym, making for a memorable intermission that was met with clear delight from fans, families, and teammates alike.

Virgin Valley opened the third quarter with back-to-back baskets, extending its lead, but the Trojans stayed engaged. Plein scored on a drive, and Gavenda repeatedly battled inside for second-chance points. Gavenda scored twice late in the quarter, including a putback off an offensive rebound, while Sheppard capped the period with a three-pointer in the final seconds. Despite the push, Virgin Valley held a 50–34 lead heading into the fourth.

Pahrump Valley saved its strongest run for the final quarter. Gavenda scored inside to start the period, and moments later Sheppard was fouled on a drive and converted both free throws. Gavenda added two more from the line before Plein spun into the lane for a basket, trimming the deficit to single digits. Gavenda continued to attack, scoring on jumpers and finishes inside, while Sheppard found him underneath for another bucket to make it 49–52 with just over a minute remaining.

After Virgin Valley extended the lead at the line, Plein drained a three-pointer with five seconds left to pull the Trojans within four. The Bulldogs sealed the game with late free throws, but not before Pahrump Valley showed its growth and ability to compete down the stretch.

Head Coach Toby Henry praised his team’s performance following the game.

“The boys played extremely hard on Friday,” Henry said. “This was a game to show us how much better we have gotten as a team and that we can compete with the top teams. I said at the beginning of the season that we want to play our best ball in February and we are close. We have to finish the season strong.”

The Trojans will look to build on Friday’s effort as they head into the final stretch of the season, continuing to sharpen their play against tough competition.
