New Transportation Program Launches to Improve Health Care Access in Rural Nevada

A new initiative is rolling out across rural southern Nevada to help residents access essential health care and social services, thanks to a $10,000 grant from The Molina Healthcare Charitable Foundation. In partnership with Molina Healthcare of Nevada and NyE Communities Coalition (NyECC), the funding supports a transportation program aimed at breaking down one of the biggest barriers facing residents in Nye, Lincoln, and Esmeralda counties: the lack of reliable transportation.

The program, which officially began in June, offers free rides to medical appointments, mental health services, and other vital resources. Services will be provided either through NyECC’s own fleet of vehicles or via fuel-only vouchers for those with access to a car but struggling to afford gas.

The need is significant. According to data cited by the organizations, more than 7% of rural and frontier Nevadans report that transportation challenges are the greatest obstacle they face when trying to access health care. For residents living in remote areas, a lack of public transportation, long distances to providers, and vehicle issues can all contribute to missed appointments and worsened health outcomes.

“Molina’s commitment to Nevada includes understanding what our communities need and finding solutions to address them,” said Rob Baughman, plan president of Molina Healthcare of Nevada. “Molina aims to enhance transportation assistance in rural areas so residents can be empowered to take action when it comes to receiving care and social services that help improve health outcomes.”

NyECC, which has served Nevada’s rural communities for more than two decades, will oversee the program and ensure that eligible residents can connect with services in a timely manner.

“Rural areas of Nevada face significant challenges in accessing health care, and rural Nevadans without transportation resources face even greater obstacles to care,” said Stacy Smith, CEO of NyE Communities Coalition. “We appreciate Molina’s support that will provide transportation services to our rural communities, bridging a significant barrier to care and creating a healthier Silver State.”

The funding will cover vehicle maintenance and repairs for NyECC’s transportation fleet, helping to ensure consistent and safe service for residents in need. The program is designed to be especially beneficial for individuals seeking preventive care or managing chronic conditions who might otherwise delay treatment due to travel limitations.

Residents interested in learning more or scheduling transportation services can contact NyECC’s certified community health workers by calling the Pahrump office at 775-727-9970 or the Tonopah office at 775-482-6561. Inquiries can also be made via email at chw@nyecc.org or online at https://nyecc.org/contact-us/.

The collaboration represents a continued commitment from both Molina and NyECC to address social determinants of health in underserved communities, particularly in areas where geographic isolation too often leads to health disparities.
