Lady Trojans Battle to the Final Out in Regional Playoff Loss to Eagles

In a game full of momentum swings, clutch hits, and gritty defense, the Pahrump Valley High School Trojans softball team came up just short in their second regional playoff matchup on Wednesday, May 7, falling to the Boulder City Eagles 9-8 in a heart-pounding contest that stretched to the final at-bat.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the game was delayed due to back-to-back postponements in Boulder City’s opening round matchup. After winning that game against Del Sol earlier in the day, the Eagles faced the Trojans just hours later in a high-stakes follow-up. Despite Boulder’s extra game and a rollercoaster of circumstances, both teams brought intensity and determination to the diamond.

The Eagles were first to strike, scoring one run in the bottom of the first after a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a groundout RBI. Pahrump’s defense held strong in the following innings, highlighted by Evalenne Armendariz’s heads-up plays at shortstop and Kayla Glenn’s consistent work from the mound. The Trojans answered back in the fourth. Sunday Colon kicked off the momentum with a hard grounder, then advanced on a hit by Evalenne. Riley Saldaña delivered a shallow fly to center that was misplayed, allowing Colon to score and tie the game 1-1.

In the fifth, the Trojans erupted offensively. Sadie Freeman led off with a single, followed by Autumn Colon reaching on an error. Madison Rodriguez battled through a tough at-bat to draw a walk, loading the bases. Sunday then launched a deep shot to center field that cleared the outfielders and rolled to the fence, bringing in three runs. Evalenne followed up with a sharp hit to first that plated Sunday. Danika Cox-Hosino capped the inning with a deep double to right, scoring another run and giving Pahrump a commanding 6-1 lead.

Boulder City didn’t go quietly. They added a run in the bottom of the fifth, and while Pahrump’s defense made key plays—including a leaping catch by Danika in right field and a soft liner snagged by Ava Chiancone at second—the Eagles remained within striking distance.

The sixth inning brought another run for Pahrump thanks to Ava’s RBI single, scoring Danika after an errant throw from third base. That made it 8-6 as Boulder clawed back with a fierce rally. A series of base hits, walks, and a defensive miscue allowed Boulder to tie the game, then take a 9-6 lead before the Trojans could shut the door with a strikeout from Evalenne in relief.

Refusing to quit, the Trojans mounted a final push in the seventh. Riley reached on a short hit to right, and Danika followed with a hit to third that was overthrown, scoring Riley. Ava’s single to center brought Danika home, trimming the deficit to one. With two outs and runners on first and second, Madison knocked a single to left, putting the go-ahead run on base. But Boulder managed to get the final out on a grounder to short, ending the thrilling contest with the Trojans just a step away from victory.

Despite the loss, Pahrump Valley showed heart, resilience, and a balanced team effort, with standout contributions from every corner of the lineup. The road isn’t over yet for the Trojans. The team will now face Mater East on Thursday, May 8 at 4 p.m. in Pahrump. With both teams holding one loss in the double elimination regional tournament, the matchup will determine who continues their postseason journey and who concludes a hard-fought season.
